CWU delivers a message for MPs

The Communication Workers Union wrote to all Labour MPs today, reaffirming that the only reasonable policy for our post is to ensure Royal Mail is transformed in the public sector.

The letter, signed by Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary, and Dave Ward, deputy general secretary, outlines the CWU’s opposition to the current format of the Bill and highlights areas which the CWU believes need altering, including detail around regulation.

The CWU will campaign against the passage of the Bill as it stands, whether or not the Government is able to secure an actual sale of Royal Mail shares in the next few months. The CWU agrees with the Government that legislation is required to address a number of problems the industry faces. The suggestions that the industry should be left as it is, finds no support from the CWU. However, the Union believes it is possible for an effective piece of legislation to be carried, if the elements of privatisation are removed. In the absence of such a move, the CWU will support a vote against the Bill at its second reading, and subsequently.

The Postal Services Bill is expected to be come to the House of Commons for its Second Reading in the next few weeks. We’ve written to every Labour MP - but the people MPs listen to the most are their own constituents. That’s why you should write to your MP as well - it just takes a couple of minutes to do that with our simple tool:
